The Pepperdine University and Libraries and the Boone Special Collections and Archives are pleased to announce the donation of digital imaging equipment from Samy’s Camera. The equipment will become part of the Digital Lab, located in Payson Library, Pepperdine’s main library location on the Malibu campus.
“We are grateful to Samy’s Camera for this generous donation,” said Dean of Libraries Mark Roosa. “As we continue to build the capacity of our Digital Lab, this new equipment will expand our capability to provide access to significant materials in our collections.”
The slide scanner and portable lightbox donated by Samy’s Camera will replace older and more time-consuming technology currently in use in the Digital Lab, which is in charge of digitizing material from the Boone Special Collections and Archives for the Pepperdine Digital Collections as well as maintaining the Pepperdine Digital Commons, an open-access repository of scholarly research.
“This equipment will allow us to review and digitize thousands of additional slides and negatives from our special collections, providing the Pepperdine Community and outside researchers with access to these valuable resources,” said Josias Bartram, Librarian for Digital Publishing, Curation, and Conversion.

About the Pepperdine Libraries
With thirteen library locations, the Pepperdine Libraries serve nearly 8,000 students and 800 faculty at Pepperdine University’s campus sites in Southern California, Washington, D.C., and abroad. Payson Library reopened last fall after a 15-month, $22.4 million renovation. Influenced by Spanish Revival architecture, the new building design honors tradition while addressing 21st-century needs for digital integration and flexibility to accommodate diverse learning styles. The new additions range from a high-tech makerspace to expanded study areas that seamlessly integrate traditional setups with more informal seating configurations.
The Boone Special Collections and Archives at Pepperdine University holds 6,801 rare books and 134 processed collections. Stored in an NEH grant-funded sustainable preservation and storage system, the department’s collections consist of rare book collections, the University Archives, the Malibu Historical Collection, the Churches of Christ Heritage Center, film and television archives, and other book and archival holdings, many of which are accessible to the public online through the Pepperdine Digital Collections.
